Redundant railway carriages have been transformed into deluxe glamping accommodation at Pen-Rhos, in the wilds of idyllic Mid-Wales countryside. Gloriously quirky, the wagons are all dog friendly and come fully plumbed, delightfully furnished and fully equipped for self-catering couples. One, the Hare’s Hut, even has its own hot tub outside for those long romantic evenings under star spangled night skies.

Each of the carriages has its own en-suite facilities including shower and toilet, plus a well appointed kitchen with cooker and fridge. They have super-comfy double beds, unbroken views and outdoor decking and seating for enjoying those stunning Welsh sunsets and al fresco meals. They are COVID secure and spaced so well apart that guests needn’t mingle at all, unless they so wish.

Run by Kate Lewis and her husband, Steve, Pen-Rhos is nine miles from Llandrindod Wells spa town and 14 miles from Rhayader, a pleasant market town in the very heart of Wales, where the beautiful Elan Valley presents a thrilling landscape of lakes and dams, a testament to British engineering ingenuity. On the doorstep are superb walks including one to the picturesque and imaginatively named Water-Break-Its-Neck waterfall, plus within a mile a friendly pub, which sells food. The Brecon Beacons are only half an hour’s drive away.

“It’s a wonderful spot and the wildlife is amazing,” says Kate.
