WORCESTER REPERTORY | Bah Humbug!

What the Dickens?! Classic festive tale gets a Rep re-vamp this December

Christmas music driving you mad already? Battling the shopping crowds sending you into a festive frenzy? And is the thought of a Brussels sprout just too much to take? Then the Worcester Repertory Company’s latest offering might be just the ticket for you! Ebenezers will be welcomed to Bah Humbug!, a brand new bitter-sweet comedy that brings a modern twist to the Scrooge story.

Written and directed by Worcester Rep Artistic Director Chris Jaeger, Bah Humbug! tells the story of Keith, a wealthy businessman who finds himself all alone on Christmas Eve… just the way he likes it. He couldn’t care less about Christmas. He hates it, in fact. Loathes the whole jingle-belling thing. But when he awakes to find a young woman in his flat, with no idea who she is, how she got there, or what she wants, it seems that Christmas may turn out a little differently this year… Who is this woman named ‘Carol’ and how does she know so much about him and his family? With ghosts of his past looming, could this stranger in his present alter the course of his future?

So, it’s yet another re-vamp for Dickens’ firm festive favourite… but this tale as old as time still seems to hold relevance, and even the most miserly of scrooges can’t help but love it. Jaeger said, “We always try to offer an alternative to pantomime at Christmas – panto isn’t everyone’s bag after all – but we still like to keep it feeling Christmassy. And what tale epitomises the festive season more than Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol? It surely has to be one of the best Christmas stories ever told. So I thought it might be nice to give it a modern twist.”

Bah Humbug! stars Murray Andrews as Keith and Alison Hellings as his mysterious visitor, ‘Carol’, both of whom have worked with the Rep on a number of occasions. Jaeger added: “Rehearsals have been great fun. We’ve laughed a lot and we hope the audiences will too… although, as with the original, there is hopefully still a slightly poignant side to the story.

“We’re really exciting to be staging yet another new work in the Swan Theatre’s wonderfully intimate Vesta Tilley Studio, and the opening performance on Tuesday 11th December will be a world premiere. Come on, don’t be a Scrooge, buy a ticket – you know you want to!”

Bah Humbug! runs from Tuesday 11th – Saturday 15th & Tuesday 18th – Saturday 22nd December at the Swan Theatre Vesta Tilley Studio. For tickets call 01905 611427 or visit www.worcesterlive.co.uk
