Toilet named one of the top loos in the UK

Wychavon now boasts one of the best places in the country to spend a penny after one of its public toilets took top honours in the Loo of the Year Awards.

The convenience in St Andrew’s Precinct in Droitwich was named as the best public toilet in both England and the UK overall, during an awards ceremony in Solihull on Friday 8 December 2017.

It is the second time Wychavon has been given the title after first winning in 2014.

Run by the British Toilet Association, the awards rank loos provided by different organisations on a range of factors, which together make them clean, safe and hygienic.

Councils, hotels, shopping centres and more take part in the competition. Inspectors pay a visit to each toilet before issuing a bronze, silver, gold or platinum rating. There are then specific awards for the best performing toilets in a variety of categories.

Overall, Wychavon’s 11 public loos in Broadway, Droitwich, Evesham and Pershore were awarded seven platinum and four gold awards. The strong performance meant the council kept its place in the Champions League of Loos, made up of those organisations who consistently maintain their toilets to the highest of standards.

Wychavon is also ninth in the Premier League of Loos, which ranks the standard of toilets maintained by local authorities only.

Cllr Emma Stokes, Executive Board Member for Environment at Wychavon District Council, said: “We’re flushed with pride at winning this award, which shows it is possible to make savings while continuing to maintain high standards. Special thanks to our contractor Mitie for the excellent job they do. This award is as much their success as it is ours.”

Wychavon is continuing to invest in its public toilets with a £50,000 refurbishment of all its loos currently underway including new sinks and separate hand dryers. New adult changing facilities will also be introduced in the toilets in St Andrew`s Precinct, Droitwich and Viaduct meadow, Evesham. Work is expected to be complete by next spring.

  • High Street Car Park,  Pershore
  • Broadway Activity Park, Broadway
  • St Andrews Square, Droitwich Spa
  • Lido Park, Droitwich Spa
  • Viaduct Meadow, Evesham
