Mayor appeals for support for Pakistan Earthquake victims

The Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Allah Ditta, is asking local people to reach out and help the victims of a 5.8-magnitude earthquake which struck the southern Mirpur district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on 24 September.  At least 125 people, including women and children, died and around 630 others were injured, many of them seriously.

Altaf’s Balti on Worcester’s Tolladine Road is one of many local businesses which rushed to offer support, holding a fundraising dinner at the restaurant at the end of October.

The Mayor is encouraging other businesses and organisations to hold fundraising events, and is offering to help promote them.

“This terrible earthquake has left devastation in its path, taking lives and destroying homes, businesses and schools, as well as people’s hopes and dreams,” said the Mayor.

“Many Worcester residents with Pakistani heritage have friends and loved ones who live in the affected area.  I am making a plea to extend the Christmas spirit of peace and goodwill to all mankind.  Please, give what you can to support victims of this earthquake.”

An online page has been set up at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/allah-ditta-1 to help raise funds to support Pakistan Earthquake Victims.
