Stanton Guildhouse was the brainchild of the late Mary Osborn, who became friends with Mahatma Gandhi while working in London. Sharing his belief in a spiritual aspect to all human activities, Mary was inspired by Gandhi’s ashrams to create her own retreat centre, dedicated to teaching traditional crafts. She achieved this by creating a charitable trust and having volunteers build the centre using reclaimed materials, completing in 1973.
