Editor’s Choice Silver Swans At Cecilia Hall Dance Centre in Great Malvern
More and more people are keeping fit and flexible in their later years by enrolling in Silver Swans, a classical ballet programme aimed at people in their 60s and above. TV celebrity Angela Rippon is perhaps their most famous participant, but many local older people are enjoying them through the Cecilia Hall Dance Centre in Great Malvern.
Silver Swans classes are giving people the skills to enjoy this most elegant of dance styles far into their dotage. The Great Malvern classes are taught by Pat Lewis, a highly experienced Royal Academy of Dance ballet teacher whose pupils range from 2½ to over 80 years. Many of her adult classes take place during the daytime and include not only ballet but also Tap, Zumba, Fitsteps, Ballroom, Latin and Flamenco.
People who sign on for Silver Swans have often taken ballet classes in their childhood or youth, but others are complete beginners drawn to this most elegant of dance styles. The classes can cater for all levels and there is also a social spin-off in taking part.
Pat says: “Silver Swans is great for mobility, strength, posture, balance and keeping the brain active. It’s designed not to be too full on as it has to be safe, but it is very good for core strength and giving people more all-round fitness.”
