Birthday celebrations for my partner and my mum at Coombe Abbey were so amazing that they both felt like royalty, and have been treating me like a queen ever since!

Fourteen of us went along to the splendid surroundings of Coombe Abbey near Coventry to mark the two milestones with a private party. Our ages ranged from 2 to 75 but everyone loved the whole event, from the moment we were greeted with Prosecco and mouth watering canapés until the time we went off chatting happily to our cars.

Dating back to the 12th century, Coombe Abbey fell victim to Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. Later it became home to Princess Elizabeth, daughter of James 1. Nowadays it is an opulent but nevertheless reasonably priced hotel, restaurant and events venue, set in a vast landscaped country estate which is greatly enjoyed by the picnicking public.

We couldn’t have chosen a better venue for our private celebration. There are rooms to any number from 10 to 140 guests, with parties waited on by friendly, professional and highly obliging staff. Entering our charming venue was stepping back to a time of genteel magnificence. The table was set impressively, gentle music played in the background and there was a wonderful ambience.

Drinks were served throughout the afternoon and no-one’s glass was long empty. We were served an elegant afternoon tea consisting of dainty sandwiches and delectable cakes of the highest quality.

The highlight came when my partner was served a surprise birthday cake by a member of staff dressed in knight’s armour, who gave us a fabulously interesting talk about the history of the abbey. The young children in our party were intrigued by his stories and were taken off for a tour of the premises by the staff, returning excited about what they had learned while the adults relaxed with tea and coffee.

There were numerous extra touches like personalised menus and my mum said it was her best birthday ever, out of 55.

We would all wholeheartedly recommend Coombe Abbey for any celebration, large or small. We just know that whatever the occasion you will have a wonderful time.
