If you’re looking for somewhere extraordinary to spend a special holiday, Cardigan Castle should do royally! Since 1110 this amazing edifice has housed kings, princes and armies, been besieged, embattled and then fallen derelict. More recently a £12 million restoration has transformed it into a premium heritage attraction and visitor destination with luxury guest accommodation and award winning food.
Reopened in 2015, Cardigan Castle won Channel 4’s accolade as Restoration of the Year. To stay in the 4 Star bed & breakfast accommodation and 5 Star self catering apartments is to find yourself drinking in a wealth of history encompassing the 100 Years War, the Welsh Revolt and the English Civil War plus many other colourful dramas.
The four bed & breakfast rooms merge contemporary style with medieval heritage and river views to create an unbeatable experience. Guests can eat in their rooms or take breakfast in the castle restaurant, 1176, named after the year when owner Lord Rhys celebrated completion of the first stone castle built by a Welshman. He did it by holding Wales’s first Eisteddfod, starting a national tradition.
The self catering apartments are in the Georgian east wing of Castle Green House, Gardener’s Cottage and Coach House, all sumptuous from the fabulous kitchens to the walk in showers.
Admission to the castle is free for all staying guests.
