2018 has been a tremendous year in terms of new restaurants and eateries opening in Worcestershire. With so much glorious produce available on the doorstep it’s no wonder that the county is attracting an abundance of new food businesses into the area. Listed below are 15 new Worcestershire restaurants and eateries to try in 2018, and there will be more to add to the list. Which ones will you be tempted to visit this year?

Yogi’s Kitchen, Pershore

Yogi’s Kitchen opened up in the Royal Arcade, Pershore in January and is owned by a young couple (husband and wife team), Channy and Rich. ‘Yogi’ I’m told is the name of their first dog, a Chihuahua, which apparently they now own 5 of! It’s not surprising that the new coffee shop / café / restaurant is very welcoming to customers who choose to bring their pets along. These two 20 somethings have injected a new lease of life into a little corner of Pershore, and their menu offers a variety of healthy breakfast, brunch and lunch options. They also cater very well for all dietary requirements.

Dam Chips, Worcester

A new chip shop opened on the Tything in Worcester back in March, bringing a taste of Amsterdam to the city.  The Dutch owner, Kevin, believes that by cooking with the frying method used in the Netherlands they will be the best chips you will ever eat. The chips come served in cones with a choice of over 20 sauces (vegan options available) and nearly everything produced is gluten free. Prices range from £1.75 (small) to £4 (extra large) for a cone of chips, and sauces cost 25p – £1 depending on size. With the slogan ‘Probably the best chips in Worcester’ printed on the shop front, Dam Chips are very confident you’ll be converted to the Dam way.

Hook at The Fish Hotel, Broadway

The Farncombe Estate overlooking the village of Broadway is home to three boutique hotels – Dormy House, Foxhill Manor and The Fish. The hill covers 400 acres of woodlands and fields and was once a global security base. Following a multi million pound investment and now a luxurious country escape, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant offer some of the best food in the Cotswolds. The launch of ‘Hook’, a new seafood inspired restaurant at The Fish was announced in March. The kitchen headed up by Martin Burge and his team create dishes for the al a carte menu such as Bouillabaisse, whole lemon sole and slow braised octopus. Prices are £30-40 for three courses.

The Cowshed at The Lock Inn Wolverley, Kidderminster

The new Cowshed restaurant located inside The Lock Inn, Wolverley was launched at the end of March, and has fantastic views overlooking the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal. The Bishops home reared roast beef is a must as the beef is sourced from the owner’s own family farm located less than a mile away, and is exceptional value at £8.95 including Yorkshire pudding and seasonal vegetables. The Cowshed restaurant menu is available Friday and Saturday evenings 6-9pm and all day on Sunday. Other dishes include the chef’s signature dish; Bishop’s pan-fried Ox liver with black pudding, red snapper with Mediterranean sauce and Gloucester Old Spot roast pork loin, with prices on the main menu ranging from £8.95 to £16.95. During all other times the summer menu is available the rest of the week and is also served up in the restaurant.

The Royal Oak Kinnersley, Earl’s Croome

A popular drinking pub with locals that has a recent history of stuggling to pull in diners is The Royal Oak in Kinnersley. The country inn has since had a new lease of life injected into the restaurant when it’s current landlord and landlady, Richard and Samia, took over in March. Samia brings a reputation from her success at The Chestnut Tree in Lower Moor and on a Monday night she cooks up her specials, with many of her dishes being influenced by her Tunisian heritage. As well as traditional pub classics expect to see seafood specials and main dishes using locally sourced meat and produce, cooked by chef Lee Cooke during the rest of the week and on weekends. Main courses range between £7.95- £13.95 from the bar menu and up to £17.95 for main dishes.

TJ’s Kitchen & Dining, Worcester

Tom and James have been chefs working in Worcestershire for the past 12 years, with their friendship dating back to when they first met at primary school. The passionate chefs joined forces in March and took over the kitchen in the Conservatory Bar on Friar Street, Worcester. Both chefs love to cook from scratch, and at TJ’s Kitchen & Dining, Tom and James try to offer as much of the menu being freshly cooked to order as possible. The menu features burgers, sandwiches and pub classics with a modern twist. They also make a fantastic chilli con carne (I know as I’ve tried it myself), and their very popular ‘Xim Xim’ bowl; a Brazilian dish inspired by James’s time working in a South American themed restaurant. Main courses are very reasonably priced with most of them being under £10. A new roof terrace opened at the end of June just in time for the World Cup England match and is the perfect spot to enjoy a burger and beer in the sunshine.

Sampson’s at The Old Pheasant

Worcestershire burger-van owner Carl Sampson found himself in the spotlight after appearing in the Channel 4 documentary ‘Burger bar to Gourmet Star’, alongside 2 Michelin-starred chef Daniel Clifford in 2015. After 3 weeks of intensive training in the kitchen, he then had to convince Massimo Bottura (3 Michelin-starred chef at Osteria Francescana), that he was in fact a Michelin trained chef himself. Since then Carl stepped away from his roadside van in Droitwich back in July 2017 and opened his first kitchen in Worcester. He now serves up his famous burgers and BBQ from The Old Pheasant on New Street, where he also has his own range of sauces available to purchase. A brand new menu will be launched at the end of June. We love Carl’s motto “Don’t just have a burger have a Sampson’s Burger”.

Be the Change Worcester

Worcester city centre’s newest 100% vegan lounge, Be The Change Foods, opened its doors in April, and has since been a very popular spot for the local veggie and vegan community. A huge selection of delicious vegan dishes are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with daily specials that add variety to an already extensive menu. Opening hours are extended on Fridays and Saturdays until late (last orders at 9pm), with plenty of pizzas, mains, burgers and desserts to tempt you to keep on coming back for more. Although alcohol isn’t currently available to buy at Be The Change, they are more than happy for you to bring your own drinks.

The Lemon Tart, Worcester

A new café opened up on the Barbourne road in Worcester in April and its welcoming owners, Aaron and Janine, are proud to offer a wide selection of snacks, cakes and hot & cold dishes which are all made on site. There’s nothing like the smell of freshly baked bread in the morning to entice you into The Lemon Tart, and once you’re inside you’ll be torn between an array of goodies to choose from. We’d be very tempted by the homemade pasties, pastries and macaroons just to name a few, and they even make their own chocolates in-house. Breakfast favourites include bacon or sausage baps and the full English has the works for just £4.50. Pop in on a Sunday between 11.30am – 4pm for a roast with all of the trimmings.

Bottles, Worcester

Bottles wine bar has been established in Worcester for a few years now, and is unique to the city centre with its onsite wine store and self service dispense machines. Owner Richard, who has been in the business for many years, knows only too well that good food goes side by side with good wine, and since May has been offering something extra to his wine loving customers. After previously working in kitchens in both Dubai and Italy, chef Jimmy Brown is on board at Bottles, cooking a selection of tapas to be enjoyed with the excellent selection of wines available. The vegan board, meat platter and cheese board are ideal for soaking up the wine, and food is served all day until 10pm. The king prawns with garlic & saffron butter were a big hit with me when I stopped by for lunch. Tapas plates costs £1.95 to £5.95, or take advantage of the ‘3 for £12 combo deal, which also includes a small basket of bread. A new menu is also coming soon!

Nest, Royal Porcelain Works, Worcester

The owners and team behind the Handmade Scotch Egg Company have opened a new café / bar / foodie haven in the historic Royal Porcelain Works following a redevelopment. Nest officially launched on 19th June following the success of Nest Ledbury, and offers a range of top-quality simple food to order along with a deli / grocery store stocking fresh produce, wine, spirits and artisan food products. Nest is open 7 days per week from 8am-8pm and welcomes everybody into the relaxed space to eat and drink and enjoy live entertainment over the summer weekends. An official opening weekend celebration has been organised on Saturday 30th June – Sunday 1st July featuring live music, children’s entertainment, a food market – a foodie adventure in and around the courtyard at the Royal Porcelain Works, staged by Nest Worcester and much more.

Ounce Bar & Kitchen, Worcester

A unique dining experience arrived in Worcester at the beginning of June, after Ounce Bar & Kitchen announced it had opened its doors in what was The Marwood on The Tything. The idea is that customers are able to order their steak size by the ounce, and on Tuesdays from 5pm decide on the weight of your steak and pay £1 per ounce. The steaks come with all of the trimmings and it’s also worth knowing that all of the meat is butchered on site. £6 lunch specials are available from noon on Tuesdays until Saturdays, as well as the main restaurant menu offering favourites such as burgers and fish & chips. On Sundays a roast is available with beef or chicken sourced from a local farmer and is £12.95 per person, again with all the trimmings. The menu is very meat orientated, but don’t worry as vegetarians are also catered for at Ounce.

Pepe Verde, Lowesmoor

There can never be too may Italian restaurants, and the news of Pepe Verde arriving in Lowesmoor at the beginning of June was sure to be a great addition to the outskirts of Worcester city centre. The restaurant is currently open from 12pm-10pm on Saturdays and 12pm-8pm from Tuesday to Friday, with a trattoria set up that is a less formal style of eatery than a ristorante. There are generally no printed menus at Pepe Verde, the service is casual with wine sold by the decanter rather than by the bottle. The food is described by chef ‘Matteo’ as modest but plentiful with prices that are in line with the more relaxed vibe here. Main courses typically cost between £5.20 and £8.70 with traditional Italian favourites on the menu such as pasta, gnocchi, meatballs, seafood dishes and homemade desserts. The menu changes throughout the week so pop in to see what’s new.

Pork Peddler Smokehouse Deli, Great Malvern

Malvern residents listen up! A new smokehouse deli using barbecue techniques to cook and smoke locally sourced free range meat over wood and charcoal will provide a gourmet alternative to standard lunch time takeaway food, and is coming to Bellvue Terrace in early August. The sandwiches are made with Peter Cook’s bread, and you can also pick up Pork Peddlers infamous porkers, huge sausage rolls, ‘what on oeuf’ pickled and smoked scotch eggs, local sourced salad, hummus and more in the shop. Being at the foot of the hills and on one of the main walking routes also gave owner,Andy, the idea of offering a selection of picnics in biodegradable packaging. Everything in the shop will be made using as many local suppliers as possible, and the unique offering aims to be an exciting alternative to the existing lunch choices in the area.

Hickory’s Smokehouse, Worcester

A taste of South America is coming to Worcester! Hickory’s Smokehouse have taken over the Pavilion and are currently undergoing a huge transformation, with the hope of being ready to launch at the end of August / beginning of September. The American-style smokehouse and barbecue restaurant will have an open kitchen and will seat up to 150 diners. We’ll be opting for the signature Smokehouse Platter (£42). It features all of the smokehouse classics in one place and includes; Memphis Style Dry Rubbed Baby Back Ribs, Hickory Slow Smoked Beef Sausage, Barbecue Pulled Pork & Pit Beans, Thick Cut Pork Belly Ribs, Kansas Style, Barbecue Glazed Spare Ribs, Texas Style Beef Briske and is served with fries, slaw and pickles. Stick around for afters and try one of the American style desserts. There’s always room for pudding right?

I contacted the Marlbank Inn, Malvern and the owner was unable to give me any further information about what to expect from the menu or when they will be open at this time.
